common blue violet (Viola sororia)

The common blue violet is sometimes referred to as the “lesbian flower.” During the early 1900s, lesbian and bisexual women would give this flower to the women they were interested in. This practice stems from Sappho, a greek lyric poet, who described herself and her lover as wearing violets in one of her poems.
